Traveling with PugsleyTonks

What is Traveling with PugsleyTonks all about?? My goal is the pursuit of that little slice of Americana. It's not big name or high-cost tourism. PugsleyTonks likes to find that diamond in the rough or go to the out of the way small town. I want to visit the oldest bar in every state with hopes that they serve some PBR on tap. Find that unique "ma-pa" restaurant with an interesting blue collar atmosphere and large portions to match. Or, perhaps its as simple as a little walkabout in the city to discover that strange little statue or other oddities. So, please come and join me in my search for Americana. Discover some obscure attraction or learn some useless information. All are welcome and its really just good, clean travel fun. PT

OLDEST BARS

BAR #3-NY, #4-CT, and even #5-RI

If you read my original posts in this category, I offered up my most important criteria for my appreciation of the oldest bars…”COMFORTABLE.” Can a lone stranger, wander in, sit down by himself at the bar, and be COMFORTABLE. Well, I am just going to fast forward through the next 3 oldest bar in New York, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. My reasoning for lumping them together is logical and self-serving. Whatever I would write about either of the 3 bars is going to be pretty much the same. They are just not the kind of places where I prefer to have a beer. But, I want to be absolutely fair, these are all VERY nice places. The establishments are just much more “restaurant” than “bar.” They are all in upscale and/or historical parts of town. The buildings are great and very well preserved. As they are all in the heart of the 13 original colonies, all of them are rich in history. But, they were just too fancy and stuffy for my taste. These would be a great place to dress up and take your wife out for that special dinner…WARNING, this dinner will cost you some real money. But, if you want to be comfortable at the bar and hammer a few happy hour beers…find another bar. But, let the quest record show that I visited the following 3 oldest bars in New York, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. PT

3. The ’76 House established 1754 in Tappen, NY

4. The Griswold Inn established 1776 in Essex, CT

5. White Horse Tavern established 1673 in Newport, RI…this one even had a posted dress code for dinner.
