Traveling with PugsleyTonks

What is Traveling with PugsleyTonks all about?? My goal is the pursuit of that little slice of Americana. It's not big name or high-cost tourism. PugsleyTonks likes to find that diamond in the rough or go to the out of the way small town. I want to visit the oldest bar in every state with hopes that they serve some PBR on tap. Find that unique "ma-pa" restaurant with an interesting blue collar atmosphere and large portions to match. Or, perhaps its as simple as a little walkabout in the city to discover that strange little statue or other oddities. So, please come and join me in my search for Americana. Discover some obscure attraction or learn some useless information. All are welcome and its really just good, clean travel fun. PT

OLDEST BARS

BAR #6 – WARREN TAVERN, MA

OK…the oldest bar quest is back on track with the Warren Tavern established in 1780 in Charlestown, MA. With the Warren Tavern, I finally casting aside my disappointments with the previous 3 bars. I am not saying this place was cheap, but its not bad considering the area. Its walking distance from downtown Boston. The place is right off the Freedom Trail and subsequently loaded with history, as well as tourists. But, despite the fact that you are not going to get a PBR here, I liked this place. Its always going to be a visit that I will never forget as I was honored to have my mother-in-law join me for this visit.

There is plenty to look at and learn about inside the bar. The place has some great old woodwork all over the restaurant and bar. As the bar lore goes, this place was the first building built after the British burned down Charlestown around 1775. Sounds like the good folks of Charlestown had their priorities in the right place. As the bar lore goes, Paul Revere gave a speech for the rededication of the tavern. I knew I liked that guy. The actual bar area sets a little back from the restaurant so you could pound a few beers at happy hour without bothering with the restaurant.

If you are in Boston and its a nice day, I highly recommend that you walk the Freedom Trail. Its a good walkabout that will take a few hours. Towards the end of the trail, you will visit the Bunker Hill Monument. As you can see in the picture below, the Bunker Hill Monument (its not the Washington Monument) is close to the Warren Tavern. So, do the trail then replenish your strength with a few beers at the Warren Tavern. PT
