Traveling with PugsleyTonks

What is Traveling with PugsleyTonks all about?? My goal is the pursuit of that little slice of Americana. It's not big name or high-cost tourism. PugsleyTonks likes to find that diamond in the rough or go to the out of the way small town. I want to visit the oldest bar in every state with hopes that they serve some PBR on tap. Find that unique "ma-pa" restaurant with an interesting blue collar atmosphere and large portions to match. Or, perhaps its as simple as a little walkabout in the city to discover that strange little statue or other oddities. So, please come and join me in my search for Americana. Discover some obscure attraction or learn some useless information. All are welcome and its really just good, clean travel fun. PT

CHALLENGE #11 – ANSWERED – This is a slick one…

OK, this one is a bit obscure….sure. It could be safely argued that this picture could be endless things…true. So, I will provide some framework to narrow down the possible options.

One…I am over 50 years old. Two…I am still active. Three…I am the most famous one of my kind. That’s plenty of help. Therefore…

What am I? or perhaps more importantly…Where am I?

Oil Slick from the USS Arizona In Pearl Harbor

CHALLENGE #11 – ANSWERED…

As several of you were aware, this is no ordinary oil slick. This is the most sacred of all oil slicks in the USA. This oil slick is leaking out of the the USS Arizona. As I hope you all know, the USS Arizona was critically damaged and sunk on December 7, 1941, during the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor. That was almost 80 years ago and the Arizona still continues to leak oil.

I would be remiss if I did not take this opportunity to acknowledge and honor the heroes that served and died on the Arizona. The attack on Pearl Harbor resulted in the deaths of 2,390 service members and civilians. Of that amount, 1,177 were crew members on board the USS Arizona. Of that amount, over 900 are entombed in the Arizona to this day. Beyond the men that were entombed on Arizona during WWII, there are actually crew members that have been interred in Arizona as recently as December 2019. If you were a surviving crew member of the Arizona, the military gives you the option to be interred with your crew members in the Arizona. Dive teams actually take the remains and place them within the ship. A fitting tribute to great men that served their country with honor. At the time of this writing, there are 2 people still alive that served on the Arizona. Both men are planning to be buried else where with their families. So, the active interment of soldiers in the USS Arizona may be done. PT
