Traveling with PugsleyTonks

What is Traveling with PugsleyTonks all about?? My goal is the pursuit of that little slice of Americana. It's not big name or high-cost tourism. PugsleyTonks likes to find that diamond in the rough or go to the out of the way small town. I want to visit the oldest bar in every state with hopes that they serve some PBR on tap. Find that unique "ma-pa" restaurant with an interesting blue collar atmosphere and large portions to match. Or, perhaps its as simple as a little walkabout in the city to discover that strange little statue or other oddities. So, please come and join me in my search for Americana. Discover some obscure attraction or learn some useless information. All are welcome and its really just good, clean travel fun. PT

CHALLENGE

CHALLENGE #18 – ANSWERED – Its “THE” Iconic HALL

I am currently deeply involved in my latest blog mission. My never ending effort continues to bring you interesting, whimsical, and occasionally useless travel entertainment. On that note, we feature a bit of an architectural CHALLENGE that I have just recently revisited. Please look at this 1930s Art Deco icon behind Carol Merrill…

Now I ask a two part question…

  1. Can you identify that iconic building behind Carol?
  2. But, for the real challenge ….What much more important and significant hall was designed based on the same building above?

Can you identify that iconic building behind Carol?

Ok, I am willing to concede that the first part of the CHALLENGE may have been a bit regionally centric. There were definitely a few readers that knew the answer, but they were also regular visitors to Cincinnati, Ohio. To the point, the building behind Carol is the Cincinnati Union Terminal.

The Union Terminal was completed in 1933. This art deco masterpiece is on the National Historic Landmark list. Truthfully though, the site has a disappointing history of use. The terminal really never had a very lengthy heyday. In its history, the terminal has been mostly underutilized, even completely dormant at times. On a more positive note, I think the usage has stabilized in recent decades. The terminal is now the permanent home for the Cincinnati History Museum as well as the Children’s Museum. Additionally, Amtrak is operating a couple lines out of the terminal again. Finally, the city recently completed a huge renovation of the terminal. The interior has a beautiful doomed roof with historic murals. If you got time, go inside and take a look.

What much more important and significant hall was designed based on the same building above?

Now, this question is what the CHALLENGE was really about. And, no one knew the answer…Shame, shame, shame. What in the world were you doing on Saturday mornings when you were a kid? The hall that was based on the Cincinnati Terminal has great importance to the entire world. Here is the Cincinnati Terminal, and here is the Hall designed from the same…

HALL of JUSTICE!!! Yes, the workplace of Superman, Batman/Robin, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash, Green Lantern, and Hawkman (the Wonder Twins were an abomination that will not be credited) was designed after the Cincinnati Union Terminal. I can imagine no higher honor for this National Historic Landmark. Aren’t you embarrassed for not knowing the answer? PT
