Traveling with PugsleyTonks

What is Traveling with PugsleyTonks all about?? My goal is the pursuit of that little slice of Americana. It's not big name or high-cost tourism. PugsleyTonks likes to find that diamond in the rough or go to the out of the way small town. I want to visit the oldest bar in every state with hopes that they serve some PBR on tap. Find that unique "ma-pa" restaurant with an interesting blue collar atmosphere and large portions to match. Or, perhaps its as simple as a little walkabout in the city to discover that strange little statue or other oddities. So, please come and join me in my search for Americana. Discover some obscure attraction or learn some useless information. All are welcome and its really just good, clean travel fun. PT

CHALLENGE #23 – ANSWERED – Where is Carol Merrill?

When we go strolling through the park, we never know what interesting people we may meet. If you are pretty enough, some distinguished gentleman may even invite your wife to sit with him so that he can read his poetry to her. And, I am dumb enough to take their picture.

Where is Carol Merrill? and for bonus points…

Who is the distinguished gentleman? and for super, super bonus points…

What story is the gentleman reading to Carol and the duck?

I liked this CHALLENGE. Three questions were up for grabs. With each question, the degree of difficulty gets ramped up. Without further ado…

Where is Carol Merrill? Carol is in Central Park, NYC, of course. As you walk through Central Park, there are many wonderful statues. There seems to be a big emphasis on authors and literature. The Literary Walk in the main Mall of Central Park is a very popular gathering area in the park.

Who is the distinguished gentleman? Its Hans Christian Anderson. The most famous of Danish fairy tale writers is reading his most famous tale to Carol and the DUCK.

What story is the gentleman reading to Carol and the duck? Why it’s the story of the “UGLY DUCKLING.” What other story would have the duck so interested.

And just for laughs and giggles, here are a two of my favorite Central Park statues….

The Alice in Wonderland statue is just so detailed and well done. Its worth finding. Speaking of finding statues, Balto is an all time favorite of mine. In certain big cities, I have a tradition of always checking in at special locations. When I visit Chicago, I always go to the original Billy Goat Pub. When I go to Dallas, I always visit the “X” and the grassy knoll at Dealey Plaza. When I go to NYC, I always visit the great American hero…Balto in Central Park. Don’t be surprised to see Balto featured in a future post.

Its worth noting that there is also a couple Christopher Columbus statues. Better go see them right away before someone decides for you that he should not be seen.

Thanks for reading Traveling with PugsleyTonks. PT
