CHALLENGE #24 – ANSWERED – The 3 Waterways Challenge!

My initial thought was to ask what city is featured in this post. But, that just seemed too easy for my highly traveled and well educated readership. So, lets make it more interesting. I give you the 3 Waterways Challenge!

Obviously, it’s probably one of the less difficult CHALLENGES. Most of the audience has visited the Three Rivers City of Pittsburgh, PA. To specifically answer the questions…

Name the waterway at point #1… Monongahela River

Name the waterway at point #2... Ohio River

Name the waterway at point #3… Allegheny River

Additionally, for bonus points…what park am I standing in to take this picture? That would be Point State Park

So, to put it all together…The Monongahela River flows west along the south side of Pittsburgh. The Allegheny River flows west along the generally north side of Pittsburgh. Subsequently, as the two rivers get to the west side of Pittsburgh, they converge to form one major river. That, of course, is the starting point for the mighty Ohio River. Furthermore, at that point on the land, there is a very nice state park, appropriately called Point State Park. Finally, no shocker, the fountain in the picture is the Point State Park Fountain.

The Point State Park area and the convergence of these rivers has quite the interesting historic beginnings. In a nut shell, the site was once the location of a French fort, named Fort Duquesne, built in the 1750s. It was the time of the French and Indian Wars, mostly between Great Britain and France. Eventually, the French were driven out of this area by the British. The French made sure to destroy Fort Duquesne on their way out. The British assumed control of the point and built their own fort. This fort was named Fort Pitt after William Pitt, a British Prime Minister of the time. And, of course, this eventually led to the modern day city of Pittsburgh. If you walk around Point State Park, there is a little museum on this history with just a few remnants/ruins of the actual Fort Pitt.
