Traveling with PugsleyTonks

What is Traveling with PugsleyTonks all about?? My goal is the pursuit of that little slice of Americana. It's not big name or high-cost tourism. PugsleyTonks likes to find that diamond in the rough or go to the out of the way small town. I want to visit the oldest bar in every state with hopes that they serve some PBR on tap. Find that unique "ma-pa" restaurant with an interesting blue collar atmosphere and large portions to match. Or, perhaps its as simple as a little walkabout in the city to discover that strange little statue or other oddities. So, please come and join me in my search for Americana. Discover some obscure attraction or learn some useless information. All are welcome and its really just good, clean travel fun. PT

CHALLENGE

CHALLENGE Answered

Roberto Clemente played where…?

Magneto was the “red herring.” While not impossible, I did not expect anyone to identify the location based on a random Magneto mural. The true key to this CHALLENGE is the mural to the far right. The picture to the below right is a zoomed in version of the CHALLENGE photo. This picture provides a much better view of one of baseball’s greatest legends…

So, if you know a shred of baseball history, you should be able to identify one of baseball’s greatest legends…Roberto Clemente. Furthermore, this mural adorns the Roberto Clemente Museum which is located in the Troy Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA. My 9th grade English teacher and I were wandering the neighborhood on a hot August day in Pittsburgh. Unfortunately, we were not able to actually visit the museum, as tours are appointment only…and we did not have one.

Is it Steel City or Iron City

Beyond the Clemente Museum, we found that the blue collar neighborhood of Troy Hill contained a couple more nuggets of interest. First, what about that Magneto mural? Well, I believe the purpose of the mural is related to the business behind it. If you look over Magneto’s right shoulder, you will see the sign for AAA Scrap Iron and Metal. My assumption is that Magneto is somewhat of a mascot for this company.

Just across the street from Magneto is piece of history worthy of mention. This decaying, old brick building is what is left of the Iron City Brewery…the primary beer of choice for true Pittsburgh residents. The brewery is non-functioning and offers no tours. Iron City Beer is now brewed out of Latrobe, PA. But, the real question is…”is Pittsburgh the Steel City…or the Iron City?” The answer is both. Originally, around year 1800, Pittsburgh made most of its money in iron. Thus, Iron City Beer began brewing in 1861. Then, in the late 1800s, Andrew Carnegie drove the industrial revolution of Pittsburgh through the steel industry. Thus, the city adopted the more recent moniker of the Steel City.

Wrap It Up

I hope you have enjoyed the CHALLENGE and this little sampler of the Troy Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA. Have a wonderful day. PT
