Traveling with PugsleyTonks

What is Traveling with PugsleyTonks all about?? My goal is the pursuit of that little slice of Americana. It's not big name or high-cost tourism. PugsleyTonks likes to find that diamond in the rough or go to the out of the way small town. I want to visit the oldest bar in every state with hopes that they serve some PBR on tap. Find that unique "ma-pa" restaurant with an interesting blue collar atmosphere and large portions to match. Or, perhaps its as simple as a little walkabout in the city to discover that strange little statue or other oddities. So, please come and join me in my search for Americana. Discover some obscure attraction or learn some useless information. All are welcome and its really just good, clean travel fun. PT

For the Person Who Has Everything

Unique Gift Ideas

We all know that certain someone that is difficult to buy a gift for at Christmas (or Birthday). Generally, anything they actually need…they just go ahead and buy it. You end up getting them some meaningless crap or default to the gift card. Fear not. I have the answer for you. Recently, I attended the Oddities and Curiosities Expo in Columbus, OH. While I attended in Columbus, you can see from the list that this expo is a big time national operation. The show was huge and was certainly odd. If you need gift ideas, this is definitely the place to get the unique gift for the person who has everything.

Making Taxidermy Odd

Prior to this show, I would not have considered taxidermy to be an odd thing. However, now that I have seen the expo, I can understand how taxidermy can be considered odd. Case in point, you can do your own taxidermy at the show. That is correct. For a considerable extra charge, you can participate in the Rat Taxidermy Class. I wish I had some action photos for you. But, the class was too expensive for my level of interest. Furthermore, they would not let me in to see the class and take pictures. But, it was there…

I will spare you pictures of the multitude of stuffed animals that were available. The one that bothered me most was Bigfoot. I am a big fan of Bigfoot and feel killing and stuffing Bigfoot is out of bounds. Sadly, I did not buy any taxidermy art because I knew that my beloved wife, Carol, would not allow it in the house. However, if I were to buy some taxidermy art, I definitely think that I would start a collection of pole dancing varmints.

From the Expected to the Unexpected

When you go to these shows you can always expect certain vendors, such as the occult and witch faction. Furthermore, you are going to see things that have some meaning that is beyond your understanding, such as the butterflies. I am not sure why there were so many preserved butterflies. But, I bet it means something.

Bottom line, if you are easily offended and bothered by this stuff…just don’t go. Just let these folks gather and enjoy their expo. Generally, they are too dysfunctional to cause any harm…so to each their own. However, there were two booths that were the closest to bothering me…

First, you could make your own blood jewelry. The booth had a sheeted off area where an on-site phlebotomist would draw your blood. Then, the other guy made it into jewelry. For reasons not clear to me, this vendor was quite popular. Momentarily, I considered getting my wife, Carol, some jewelry of my own blood. But, do you really want to take a needle from a phlebotomist that works at the “Oddities and Curiosities Expo?” Even further twisted, I thought the serial killer, shadow boxes might be crossing the line. These were real killers that killed real people…not sure I want to hang out with the guy that makes shadow boxes honoring different serial killers. But, that’s just me.

Good People Watching

Just so the I do not implicate my wife on this questionable blog mission, she was not with me on this experience. However, I think she would have been entertained. Often times, she joins me on a trip where she has zero interest in the subject matter. However, she says she is willing to go because…”there will be good people watching.” Well, the Oddities and Curiosity Expo does not disappoint…

Wrap It Up

Well, I realize that its probably too late for this post to help you for this year’s Christmas gift giving. However, the Expo calendar basically repeats itself each year. Its a popular show and I am sure there is a coming date in a city near you. So, for the person who has everything, show up at the Oddities and Curiosity Expo in your town. You are sure to find that one of a kind Christmas gift just for her/him. Have a wonderful day…Merry Christmas. PT
