Frank Lloyd Wright?
I am going to ask for a little forgiveness and tolerance on this post. Some might argue that a discussion on Frank Lloyd Wright (FLW) is a bit above the demographic of this blog audience, and more importantly, against the intent and spirit of the blog. In my defense, I offer two arguments. One, this place was unique…it was definitely odd…and absolutely NOT where you would expect the largest collection of FLW architecture. Secondly, my wife liked it…nough said. If my wife can pretend to enjoy herself when I am dragging her to the largest popcorn ball or biggest ball of twine…then I can give her one post on FLW. PugsleyTonks takes care of his beloved wife.
OK, back to FLW…where is the single largest collection of FLW architecture??….apparently, it’s at Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Florida. As the story goes, sometime around 1939, the President of this college asked FLW if he would design the campus buildings at his college. Certainly, it’s no shocker that the President asked for his services….what is a shocker is…why in the world did FLW agree to do this? Well, I have no idea. And, unlike most of my blog posts…FLW is not a big interest of mine. So, if you want to know why he did this…go research it yourself.
FLW designed chapel Another FLW designed chapel
Florida Southern College is in Lakeland, Florida. That is in “non-coastal” Florida. In other words, all the miserable heat of Florida without any of the coastal beauty. But, as interior Florida goes…this place was scenic enough. It’s set on a beautiful lake (thus Lakeland…duh) with white swans swimming all about. As to the campus, it’s FLW City. There are about 13 or 14 campus buildings that were all designed by FLW. I am not qualified to describe what it looks like…so I will just say it seemed very interesting and very FLWish. Check out the pictures if you are remotely into FLW. In summary, if architecture is your thing…and you are willing to brave interior Florida…this is your ultimate Frank Lloyd Wright Oasis. PT
I think it’s another FLW FLW stuff
Gotta go to Falling Water now!
I’ve been there! As you know, I am a FLW aficionado and have visited 49 Wright Sites. Florida Southern is a favorite. I like that you are willing to stray from your normal demographic and share. Go PT!
FLWfans, take note! These are new to me! Thanks for posting!
