GLEN CANYON DAM
Maybe it’s just me, but I think most people have heard of Hoover Dam and Lake Mead. These attractions are more less the end of the Grand Canyon. They make a nice day trip from Las Vegas. But, I wanted to give a shout out to the lesser-known little brother/sister…the Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell. Maybe Glen Canyon Dam is not as big as Hoover Dam, but Glen Canyon Dam is basically the start of the Grand Canyon…and I think its a travel diamond in the rough.
Lake Powell is the large scenic lake that resulted from the building of the Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River. The location is more less on the border of Arizona and Utah. As the Colorado River exits the dam, it flows south and a bit west to ultimately enter the Grand Canyon National Park. Thus, the Glen Canyon Dam and the Hoover Dam are the bookends that begin and end the Grand Canyon. In fact, if you look down into the river from the Glen Canyon Dam, you can see many riverboats along the river shore. This is the starting point for many river excursions that go down the Colorado and pass through the Grand Canyon National Park. There is an easy place to park your car and walk along the dam. So, please make the effort to stop here and enjoy the scenery…the place where the Grand Canyon begins.
While you are in the area, there are a couple noteworthy attractions that I failed to visit…Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend. Allow some time for these attractions. Do not repeat my failures. PT
