Traveling with PugsleyTonks

What is Traveling with PugsleyTonks all about?? My goal is the pursuit of that little slice of Americana. It's not big name or high-cost tourism. PugsleyTonks likes to find that diamond in the rough or go to the out of the way small town. I want to visit the oldest bar in every state with hopes that they serve some PBR on tap. Find that unique "ma-pa" restaurant with an interesting blue collar atmosphere and large portions to match. Or, perhaps its as simple as a little walkabout in the city to discover that strange little statue or other oddities. So, please come and join me in my search for Americana. Discover some obscure attraction or learn some useless information. All are welcome and its really just good, clean travel fun. PT

MUSEUMS

Huh? Museum of what?

Once again, its time for a brief post just for Laughs and Giggles (L&G). Therefore, I have discovered in my travels that there is a museum for everything. In many places in the world…there are poor, obsessive souls who decided to collect a couple thousand widgets. Furthermore, these poor souls yearned for others to see and experience their collection of widgets. Thankfully, there are people in the world like PugsleyTonks. Typically, empathy is not my strong suit. But, for these poor souls who want desperately for you to see their widgets…I am here for you. In my never ending pursuit to help others…I offer you the Paul A. Johnson Pencil Sharpener Museum.

The Reverend Paul Johnson had a passion for pencil sharpeners. And, he had a shed in his yard. For over 20 years, the Reverend amassed over 3,500 pencil sharpeners for his shed. Sadly, in 2010, Reverend Johnson passed away. But, his legacy did not die. In 2011, the Hocking Hills Welcome Center (near Logan, OH) agreed to take over the legacy and forever feature the Pencil Sharpener Museum as the major attraction for their center. Putting the museum at the visitor center accomplished two main goals. First, tourists from all over the world can now bask in the glory of his collection. Secondly, it allowed Mrs. Johnson to get the shed off her lawn. Therefore, everyone was HAPPY!

Many times, these tiny museums end up just being commercial gift shops. And, the focus is only money. But, not here. Because, there is nothing to buy. Secondly, no one works in the shed. Lastly, Its FREE to enter. I was alone in the museum to experience the whole pencil sharpener vibe. There was no PBR or pug sharpers. But, I saw lots of everything else.

I hope you had as many laughs and giggles reading this as I did writing it. Better yet, live the experience yourself by visiting the Paul A. Johnson Pencil Sharpener Museum at the Hocking Hills Visitors Center. Have a happy day. PT
