EVERY STATE & THE OLDEST BAR TOO
I have pinned this post to the start of my blog because its a good place to start to understand me and my blog. My blog is about traveling in my own strange and curious way. I like travel quests and these were the two quests that really got me started. First, I wanted to visit every state in the USA. Secondly, I decided to try to visit the oldest bar in each state.
In a perfect world, I would have started these quests together, but I did not. When I first decided to visit every state, I completed an inventory of all states visited (I recommend that everyone make this list). At that time, I had visited 38 states. It’s from this point that I really started tracking and consciously thinking about this quest. For those of you that are playing at home, my final 12 states were Rhode Island, New Mexico, Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, and Idaho. For full disclosure, I must also admit that I am not a man of high standards. My standard for visiting each state is to just get out and set foot in the state. The only thing that does NOT count is airports. If you never leave the airport, you do not get state credit. Jumping ahead in the story, as of this writing, I have visited 49 states. In subsequent blogs under the category of USA STATES, I will do a post for each of these final 12 states. Ultimately, this will lead to the exciting completion of this epic quest…visit my 50th state…IDAHO.
With this quest underway, I realized that I really liked this travel pursuit. I wanted more quests. What better way to combine two of my great passions… drinking and traveling…so I started another quest to visit the oldest bar in every state. To begin this quest, the first step was to find a source of information to guide my travels. So, to give credit where credit is due, my guiding list is the following website…
https://www.thrillist.com/culture/oldest-bar-america-all-50-states Is it a perfect list?… I doubt it. There may be disputes in some states. But, who cares. You have to commit to a list and stick to it. So, thanks again to the thrillist.com folks for giving me one of my favorite travel quests. Subsequent posts in the OLDEST BAR category will briefly describe my stop and experience at each oldest bar. This is an active quest that started in April of 2018. I suspect it will last for many years from now. But heck, it’s not the destination…its the journey.
And the final point of this post…why this picture? Easy! I told you in the first sentence that this post is a good way to get to understand me and my blog. Well, not only is this blog about travel…its about the things that I like…and I really like pugs and PBR. So, do not be surprised if these two treasured features pop up from time to time throughout this blog. PT
