On this Date in History
Not the First, but the Second
I wanted to do a Quick Hitter post to recognize the New Year. However, I could not think of a PugsleyTonks’ appropriate idea relevant to January 1st. So, I did the second best thing. I found a PugsleyTonks’ appropriate idea relevant to January 2nd. In 1898, on this date in history, A legendary beer, known as Pabst Beer, was officially rebranded as Pabst Blue Ribbon…
In 1893, at the World Exposition in Chicago, Pabst Beer was awarded the blue ribbon as “America’s Best” beer. Following that win, the Pabst Brewing Company began using blue ribbons in their brand marketing. The brewery workers literally tied a small, a blue silk ribbon (shown above) around each bottle of Pabst Beer. As the beer was extremely popular, many cultured bar flies would merely say…”get me a Blue Ribbon.” Naturally, the marketing folks at Pabst Brewing really liked this development. So, on January 2, 1898, Pabst Beer officially renamed its flagship beer to Pabst Blue Ribbon. The company continued using the silk blue ribbons until the approach of World War I when silk use was restricted for the war effort (parachutes mostly). At that point, Pabst Blue Ribbon adopted the great logo used to this day…
Great PBR moments…
How can I pass up this occasion without recognizing some great PBR moments while Traveling with PugsleyTonks…
The above left picture was the first romantic get-away with Carol to the historic Pabst brewery district in Milwaukee, WI. I love my wife too much not to take her back soon. Next, the above right picture was taken by my fellow traveler, Goosebuster. We were in Peoria Heights which used to be a major PBR brewery. The only functioning remnant of the good old days was the preserved tasting room…open daily at 5pm.
While Pabst Blue Ribbon in any form is a wonderful thing, PBR on tap is my ultimate culinary experience. In a good year, I try to do a pilgrimage to Richmond, Virginia, at Halloween. There is an incredible Halloween celebration in Richmond…and I can mooch off my sister to keep expenses down. But, beyond that, there is Joe’s Inn. In my travels, I occasionally find PBR on tap. But, Joe’s Inn is the only place that I have encountered where PBR is not only on tap…but, in PITCHERS as well. For only $14, I get my own pitcher. Now, the only thing better than that is my home bar, the Kraft House No.5. Generally, they give me the 16 oz. PBR pounders for my daily fare. However, in honor of my birthday each year, they add a PBR keg to the board which clearly raises the standard beyond the usual fufu craft beers. I love you guys ❤.
Its PBR Day for me
In summation…January 2, 1898…Pabst Beer was officially established as Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer. For reasons NOT clear to me, Congress has not yet officially designated this day as a national holiday. However, this gross over sight from our government will not stop me from recognizing these significant events on this date in history. Have a wonderful PBR Day and have one on me. PT
