Traveling with PugsleyTonks

What is Traveling with PugsleyTonks all about?? My goal is the pursuit of that little slice of Americana. It's not big name or high-cost tourism. PugsleyTonks likes to find that diamond in the rough or go to the out of the way small town. I want to visit the oldest bar in every state with hopes that they serve some PBR on tap. Find that unique "ma-pa" restaurant with an interesting blue collar atmosphere and large portions to match. Or, perhaps its as simple as a little walkabout in the city to discover that strange little statue or other oddities. So, please come and join me in my search for Americana. Discover some obscure attraction or learn some useless information. All are welcome and its really just good, clean travel fun. PT

Planning your Globe Vacation

I know everyone has had that feeling. You are dealing with the hustle and bustle of your job and daily life. Then, for sanity sake, you know that its time to plan a getaway. But, not just any getaway…no. You get that compelling feeling that it must be a GLOBE vacation. Of course, you do not mean a vacation where you travel the globe…too mundane and expensive. Rather, you crave a vacation where you can explore the fun of globes. Yeah…globes. Those spherical things with the earth on them. But, globe vacations can be tough to plan. Where are the best globe vacations? Fear not! PugsleyTonks is here for you. Let me provide some expert guidance on planning your globe vacation.

Feast your eyes on the pride and joy of Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts. At twenty-eight feet in diameter and weighing in at 25 tons, the Babson World Globe is the 2nd Largest Rotating Globe in the world. Wonderfully, this large scale model of the earth does not just sit there. Rather, it rotates on its 23.5 degree axis. Just like the real thing. The name sake of the globe and college is Roger Babson. Roger Babson was an extremely successful financier, entrepreneur, and philanthropist that believed globalized business is the key to world peace and prosperity. Consequently, he commissioned this globe to impress upon students the importance of the world as a whole. Thankfully, for a mere $60k per year, you can send your kid to this rich, isolated, liberal arts bubble in order to appreciate the “world as a whole.” 😂

So, I know what you are thinking. True, it would be easy to spend a long weekend on your lawn chair just watching the 2nd largest globe spin on its 23.5 degree axis. But wait, it gets even better. Amazingly, the world’s FIRST largest globe is within reasonable driving distance. Fold up the lawn chair. We are off to Yarmouth, Maine.

So, I give you Eartha…the world’s largest rotating globe. Completed in July 1998, Eartha measures 41 feet in diameter, with a circumference of 129 feet, and weighing in at 6,000 pounds. This three story globe sits in the lobby of an office building which is open to the public during regular business hours. Furthermore, its FREE. Appropriately, the DeLorme mapping and navigational company built Eartha and formerly resided in the building. Subsequently, DeLorme was purchased by Garmin, who remains there to this day. Apologies in advance for my interior photography. Once you are inside, the limited space of the lobby does not allow you to back up for better perspective.

Eartha was definitely far more impressive than I anticipated. Its huge. And, its detailed. The surface is all high resolution, satellite images. Eartha is supposedly a highly accurate 1 to 1,000,000 scale. And, as I said, it rotates on the 23.5 degree axis…just like Mother Earth. That is, if the rotating mechanism is not broken as it was on the day of my visit. Finally, its not just a random claim of being the World Largest Rotating Globe…its been certified.

There you go. You have all you need to start planning your globe vacation. The largest rotating globe in Yarmouth, Maine, is only 2.5 hours from the second largest globe in Wellesley, Massachusetts. Both amazing attractions are absolutely free. Furthermore, as you drive from one to the other, you will be briefly in New Hampshire. NH has these road side, liquor outlets just off I-95. These are great places for some bargain booze. But, wait until you get home to enjoy the bargain booze. PugsleyTonks never drinks and drives. Have a great day. PT
