Traveling with PugsleyTonks

Traveling with PugsleyTonks is about the pursuit of that little slice of Americana. It's not big name or high-cost tourism. PugsleyTonks likes to find that little known tourist trap…that diamond in the rough attraction…the hole in the wall restaurant…or the special dive bar serving PBR. So, please come and join me in my search for Americana. All are welcome and its really just good, clean travel fun. PT

HIDDEN GEMS

Pure Wisconsin

Feltz’s Dairy Store

Recently, I was wandering northern Wisconsin with a Minor Public Official. In addition to our full blog mission itinerary, we were also searching for that perfect “ma-pa” Wisconsin, roadside cheese shop. WOW!…did we hit a homerun. I could not have imagined a better spontaneous, cheese shop stop than Feltz’s Dairy Store…Pure Wisconsin.

Dairy Store means Dairy Cows

If overused marketing terms, like “buy local” or “farm to table,” are important to you, Feltz’s Dairy Store is your place. You look in one direction and you see every possible farm fresh product. Then, look the other direction and you can see the cows being milked. I was a bit concerned that the cows could see all the steaks sitting on the shelves. But, these were dairy cows…and the steak were beef cattle…so, maybe its OK.

The contributing cows are all on site. You are welcome to visit them in their nice, climate controlled, milking barn. While visiting the barn, be sure to note to very popular “smart cow brush.” This green brush continuously spins to provide the cows with pure cow, back scratching pleasure. These are some well cared for dairy cows…

Obviously, all this cow fun leads to any and all cheese products. Beyond the cheese, we also sampled some excellent ice cream. There were meats, milk, wine, etc…to complete your Wisconsin shopping experience.

Best Corn Maze Ever

Beyond the cow/cheese experience, Feltz’s Dairy had the best corn maze that I have ever tried. I don’t know the official acreage of the maze, but it was huge. There are 6.4 miles of paths in three different mazes. The corn is tall enough to give you that proper enclosed and trapped feeling. We choose the medium maze with a 20-30 minutes estimated completion time. But, my well proven dungeon technique of “always go right” enabled us to escape in an impressive 13 minutes.

I learned two fun facts while lost in the maze. One, I was told by a once trusted friend that most corn stalks hold only one ear of corn…WRONG! In the maze, most stalks of corn had 2 or 3 ears. Secondly, the extremely large corn mazes are not made by cutting the corn. They use GPS technology along with their computerized seeding systems to plant the corn seeds just where they need to be. When the corn grows up…voila!…your maze is born. That’s smart stuff…and its was a great corn maze.

Wrap It Up

To be clear, this place had far more family entertainment that we did not experience. There was a petting zoo, playland, etc. But, we are always sensitive to the optics of two strange, upper middle aged men hanging out with the kiddos. So, we avoided those things.

Anyway, the folks at Feltz’s Dairy Farm were outstanding. In fact, the corn maze was not yet open for the season. However, after telling them of our vast travels and the blog site…they allowed us access to the maze at no charge. Thank you Jake. So, if you are looking for that Pure Wisconsin roadside experience, look no further that the Feltz’s Dairy Store of Stevens Point, WI. Have a wonderful day. PT
