Reader’s Blog Mission
On a chilly spring day in Portland, Maine, I had the pleasure to enjoy the local cuisine on the wharf. Naturally, as I was at the Portland Lobster House, I dined on an overprized Maine lobster. Admittedly, it was delicious. But, just because lobsters are local and readily available…the Portland folks still do not give them up cheaply. However, I digress. My lobster has very little to do with this post. Rather, my point is that I noticed some random pieces of a cement wall on the next pier over. So, PugsleyTonks had to investigate. It ended up being more interesting than I thought…
The pieces of cement were actual pieces of the Berlin Wall. As an unnecessary history summary, the wall was built in Berlin in 1961 to stop East Germans from defecting to the west. Finally, in 1989, the German people tore down the wall which led to the eventually reuniting of Germany. Well…where did all the pieces go???
As you see above, a couple pieces ended up on the wharf in Portland, Maine. But, how many other USA locations have significant pieces of the Berlin wall? Well, according to my often flawed research, there are 5 other places in the USA that feature pieces of the Berlin wall. And, these places would be:
- Dallas Hotel Anatole in Dallas, Texas
- National Churchill Museum in Fulton, Missouri
- Kowsky Plaza in New York, NY
- Wende Museum in Los Angeles, CA
- Mens bathroom at Main Street Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada
So, let’s do a reader’s blog mission. Typically, I would spend a couple years gathering these photos. But, will you help me? A significant portion of the readership are travelers scattered throughout the USA. Therefore, please contribute to my blog with your own mission. If you get anywhere near any of these places…take a selfie or two in front of the Berlin wall pieces. Then, send the picture to my email, text me, or however you prefer. I want to see if its possible to complete my Berlin wall collection through the readers. By the way, the Marquis photo is the Las Vegas one. Its the actual wall behind the urinal. Obviously, be sure to include the urinal in your picture. Ideally, try not to get kicked out of casino for taking pictures in the Men’s bathroom.
Well, that’s it. If you are the first to send me your picture by a wall piece, I will do a short post to update everyone on the mission progress. Unlike my photo, your face must be in the wall picture to become a post. That is the mission. If anyone is arrested or encounters any problems on this mission, I will disavow any prior knowledge of your actions. “This blog will self destruct in 5 seconds. Good luck, Jim.” PT

Here’s another post on wall fragments… https://travelingwithpt.com/challenge-whats-carol-touching/
Reading about the Berlin Wall segments got me thinking that I have seen segments in the US that are not part of your list; specifically, at the Seattle Center (home of the Space Needle) and at Fort Benning, GA US Infantry Museum. This got me thinking, so I queried the source that is second only to PT in reliability – Wikipedia. Lo and behold, there appears to be several locations in the US – here is the list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Berlin_Wall_segments#United_States.
Go Tigers!
Thank you for reading and commenting on Traveling with PugsleyTonks. Nice to know there are more pieces. As I always say, my research is not always thorough. Feel free to send in your Berlin Wall selfies wherever you find them.
I really like your writing!
