SNOOK HAVEN
When I was thinking of the “FINE DINING” category, I believe I had Snook Haven in mind. Admittedly, for most of the restaurants in the FINE DINING category, I have only been to them once or twice…not Snook Haven. I have family connections that dwell on the Myakka River. This has allowed me to visit Snook Haven dozens of times over the last decade or two. So, if you are close to I-75, anywhere near Venice, Florida, make a stop at Snook Haven for some down-home BBQ and beer.
But, lets back up and start at the beginning. The restaurant is just a mile or so off of I-75 near Venice, Florida. As You approach the entrance, you will see the big sign directing you down a dirt road towards the Snook Haven. Now, the dirt road that you are traveling down may give you the feeling that you are being led into a “Deliverance” type trap. DO NOT LOSE FAITH.
Just enjoy the local foliage and rustic scenery. In a very short while, you will see the restaurant. Park in whatever open space kind of resembles a parking space. Get out of your car and view the charming building that is the Snook Haven, nestled along the beautiful, and gator infested Myakka River.
Beyond the great scenery, its the diversity of clientele that has always struck me as interesting at the Snook. During the day…and particularly in snow bird season…the place fills up with the retirement community crowd. But, on nights and weekends, its live bands, bikers, and tourists just wanting to have fun. By the way, if you happen to have access to the Myakka River, it has a boat dock and welcomes visitors from the river side too. I have visited by boat far more than land.

Come by the Snook and learn about the history. The “official” bar only dates back to the 90s or so. But, as the bar lore goes, the landing area on the river started getting regular use by the fine folk working against that national failed experiment, known as prohibition. Over the years, they claim it was used in Hollywood movies…it was a fishing camp…but now, the land is protected and the bar maintains a solid business with many loyal patrons. The menu features all things smoked and barbecued. Naturally, it has the gator appetizers which are a tourist staple. The Snook offers many local craft beers, as well as bottled/canned traditional beers. My only complaint about Snook Haven is the there is NO PBR. This place screams for PBR on tap. The evening patrons would be all over it. Be that as it may, the Snook is outstanding. I get into this area annually. I never fail to visit Snook Haven. With this trip, PugsleyTonks was able to get some updated pictures and now spreads the word about the FINE DINING experience awaiting everyone at the Snook Haven. PT
Lastly, I wanted to dedicate this post to my wonderful niece Catie with whom I have shared many a meal with at Snook Haven. On the date of this posting, Catie is marrying George, who is also a righteous guy who reportedly got PBR at the wedding in my honor. I wish you both many years of happiness…PT
I can’t believe I haven’t visited Snook Haven in my Venice area travels. Now in my list! Love your blog- keep it coming!❤️
Best wishes to Catie and Congratulations to George! Venice has been on my list of places to visit. It’s the home of Fusion Firearms. Not sure if they have a retail shop, but make some awesome custom handguns. I’ll definitely visit the Snook when I get there.
I have always been impressed with you as an orator, and I was extremely impressed with the carry over into your writing. Took me back to various road trips: “we will be there in 2 cartoons”.
