Traveling with PugsleyTonks

What is Traveling with PugsleyTonks all about?? My goal is the pursuit of that little slice of Americana. It's not big name or high-cost tourism. PugsleyTonks likes to find that diamond in the rough or go to the out of the way small town. I want to visit the oldest bar in every state with hopes that they serve some PBR on tap. Find that unique "ma-pa" restaurant with an interesting blue collar atmosphere and large portions to match. Or, perhaps its as simple as a little walkabout in the city to discover that strange little statue or other oddities. So, please come and join me in my search for Americana. Discover some obscure attraction or learn some useless information. All are welcome and its really just good, clean travel fun. PT

HIDDEN GEMSLaughs & Giggles

Stop to Smell the Roses

There are several semi-confidential blog principles that PugsleyTonks follows in order to shape and direct this website. On this day, I will reveal to you principle #3 on this important list. That is…”#3. Try not to be totally focused just on your vacation endpoint. Always pay attention to the little points of interest along the way.” I realize this is not always possible. Unfortunately, there may be time constraints or intolerant passengers that might curtail this effort. But, if you are going from Ohio to Florida, why not check the route along the way. Then, see what obscure travel gems are waiting just off the highway. Or, in the travel sense…Stop to Smell the Roses.

So, on one of my many southernly trips down I-95, I discovered this hidden gem in no where, Georgia. It’s literally just two minutes off the interstate. In a small park, featuring old growth trees and Spanish moss, you will find Christ’s Chapel. Furthermore, Christ’s Chapel has the noteworthy distinction to be the “Smallest Church in America.” Of course, you know I love superlatives. In past posts, we have had the Largest Ball of Twine, the Smallest Post Office, the Largest Ball of Popcorn. Now, I respectfully introduce you to the Smallest Church in America.

Christ’s Chapel is a non-denominational, Christian church. The church is about 190 square feet and has a pre-COVID capacity of 12 worshippers. In 1947, a good Christian lady, named Mary Harper, had the chapel built. Admirably, she also deeded the property over to Jesus Christ. I am not sure how the real estate details work with deeding something over to Jesus Christ. But, I am sure it’s the thought that counts. Shockingly enough, in November 2015, some idiot actually set the place on fire. Thankfully, the community immediately raised the money to make the necessary repairs. In short order, this beloved, local landmark was restored. Typically, they still do a monthly service in the chapel. But, I suspect that COVID may be putting a damper on the ongoing services.

I hope you have enjoyed this short post on Christ’s Chapel, the Smallest Church in America. By following principle #3, you will be pleasantly surprised at all the small and unusual sites along your vacation path. Occasionally, you may discover some duds that were not worth your time. But, even duds can be worth a laugh and a good memory. So, take a chance and Stop to Smell the Roses when you are traveling. PT

Two minutes off the highway, so less than half a cartoon in real time.
