Traveling with PugsleyTonks

What is Traveling with PugsleyTonks all about?? My goal is the pursuit of that little slice of Americana. It's not big name or high-cost tourism. PugsleyTonks likes to find that diamond in the rough or go to the out of the way small town. I want to visit the oldest bar in every state with hopes that they serve some PBR on tap. Find that unique "ma-pa" restaurant with an interesting blue collar atmosphere and large portions to match. Or, perhaps its as simple as a little walkabout in the city to discover that strange little statue or other oddities. So, please come and join me in my search for Americana. Discover some obscure attraction or learn some useless information. All are welcome and its really just good, clean travel fun. PT

HIDDEN GEMS

They had me at Double Wide

Finding the Hidden Gem

On the east side of Dallas, there is an interesting district called Deep Ellum. Deep Ellum is the gentrified, artsy-fartsy, live music, entertainment neighborhood of Dallas. It’s where all the cool kids go for craft breweries, trendy live music, and street art. However, if you do your research (or just read my blog), you can avoid all the happening places. You can find that hidden gem of a tavern where people like me go to avoid “happening” people. So, how did I find such a place? In this case, it was embarrassingly easy. Sometimes, it just takes the right name. Once I heard the bar was called Double Wide, I did not need any further details on live music or beer selection. Certainly not. They had me at Double Wide.

Sometimes, no PBR is OK

It did not take me long to know that I was in the right place. As usual, Carol and I entered the establishment and bellied up to the bar. I gave the bar it’s first test by ordering a PBR. The barkeep gave me a slightly annoyed look and said, “we don’t do that stuff down here.” Then, without asking me anything further, he reached into the cooler and handed me a cold Lone Star. I was impressed with his approach and when in Rome…Lone Star it is. Now, for Carol, the path was different. When the bar logo is…”drinks that hit harder than Dad!”…Carol is going for the cocktails. Admirably, she choose the YooHoo YeeHaw, described as where the white Russian meets white trash. And, there was a golden Elvis behind the bar if that is not enough class for you.

Art is in the eye of the Beholder

Beyond the very entertaining barkeep, the next thing that caught my eye was the art. It took me 3 Lone Stars just to get through all of the precious works of art surrounding us. As art is better seen than described, let’s let this montage speak for itself…

It only gets better…

If the inside bar was not enough, the Double Wide came with a nice outdoor patio drinking area. So, as it was a rare day in Dallas when the temperature was under 90 degrees, I took my Lone Star to the outside seating area. The outside seating area was truly one of the more unique spaces that I have encountered. Sadly, Carol refused to sit in the seating area…or actually touch anything on the patio.

Wrap it up

Well, for those that know me, I am sure you are not surprised that the Double Wide really appealed to my naturally white trash personality. But, it should be noted that my pseudo classy wife, Carol, liked the visit as well. Double Wide is a premiere watering hole and a hidden gem of Americana. So, if you are forced listen to trendy music at “happening” Dallas bars, you are probably headed to the Deep Ellum neighborhood. But, if you are in Deep Ellum and want to minimize your exposure to these happening things…go to the Double Wide. The name says it all. They had me at Double Wide. Have a wonderful day. PT
