Traveling with PugsleyTonks

What is Traveling with PugsleyTonks all about?? My goal is the pursuit of that little slice of Americana. It's not big name or high-cost tourism. PugsleyTonks likes to find that diamond in the rough or go to the out of the way small town. I want to visit the oldest bar in every state with hopes that they serve some PBR on tap. Find that unique "ma-pa" restaurant with an interesting blue collar atmosphere and large portions to match. Or, perhaps its as simple as a little walkabout in the city to discover that strange little statue or other oddities. So, please come and join me in my search for Americana. Discover some obscure attraction or learn some useless information. All are welcome and its really just good, clean travel fun. PT

CHALLENGE #14 – ANSWERED – Name that LEGEND

There are legends and then there are LEGENDS. Both statues depict the same LEGEND in two different US cities. There may be more versions in other cities…he certainly deserves them. His heyday was central Europe around 1200 to 1300 AD. I can think of few individuals that have contributed more to mankind than this King. So….

Name that LEGEND!

For bonus points, identify either city honoring this LEGEND.

CHALLENGE #14 – ANSWERED…

As I said…I can think of few others that have contributed more to mankind than King Gambrinus. King Gambrinus is the inventor of beer….King of Beer! King Gambrinus was a Flemish King who reigned around 1200-1300 A.D. Admittedly, I had no idea what “Flemish” was. I have now learned that its anything having to do with the area of Flanders. Where’s Flanders? Flanders is an area of northern Belgium/southern Netherlands. Now you know where beer was born and ALL HAIL TO KING GAMBRINUS…KING OF BEER!!

There was only one reader that knew King Gambrinus’ identity. I certainly hoped that he would know who Gambrinus was….as one of the statues are about a 1000 feet from their front door. The right picture (a.k.a. fat Gambrinus) above is the statue of Gambrinus on Front Street that greets visitors the Brewery District in Columbus, Ohio. But, the left picture (a.k.a. athletic Gabrinus) above is much more special to me. That statue sits in the courtyard of the Best Place Tavern. The Best Place Taverns is one of the taverns within the historic brewery area of Pabst Blue Ribbon in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. ALL HAIL TO PBR!! PT
