Traveling with PugsleyTonks

Traveling with PugsleyTonks is about the pursuit of that little slice of Americana. It's not big name or high-cost tourism. PugsleyTonks likes to find that little known tourist trap…that diamond in the rough attraction…the hole in the wall restaurant…or the special dive bar serving PBR. So, please come and join me in my search for Americana. All are welcome and its really just good, clean travel fun. PT

"FINE" DININGROAD TRIP

Buc-ee’s Has Arrived

A Historic Moment for Ohio

For some of you, I realize Buc-ee’s may be old hat. However, for those readers that do not travel much in the south, Buc-ee’s is a bit more unknown. Furthermore, until last week, there was no operational Buc-ee’s in all of Ohio. Well, with this week’s grand opening in Huber Heights (i.e. near Dayton), Buc-e’s has arrived in Ohio. This is a historic moment for Ohio. So, I thought it only appropriate to honor Buc-ee’s with this post…

The Basics on Buc-ee’s

Buc-ee’s is part 24/7 service station…part convenience store…part restaurant…and part Disney World. As for the service station, it’s massive. Typically, you will find well over 100 pumps. Furthermore, one of many unique aspects of Buc-ee’s is that NO semi trucks are allowed to gas up. That’s right…cars/small trucks only.

To be clear, do not let over 100 pumps and no semi’s fool you. Buc-ee’s is almost always crowded. There is a cult-like following to Buc-ee’s stores. I am not sure there are off-hours in their 24/7 operation.

Convenience and Dining Experience

Basically, anything that you could ever need in life…you can buy at Buc-ee’s. The “convenience” store rivals any big box store for inventory. In fact, the Luling, Texas, Buc-ee’s has won the honored distinction of being the “World’s Largest Convenience Store.”

As with the gas pumps, the convenience store can be frantic and exceptionally busy. I was hoping Carol would have a chance to peruse the merchandise and make some high fashion choices. However, she took one look at the crowd and checkout lines…and was only willing to pee and escape. Therefore, she deprived me enjoying the classic cuisine that is Buc-ee’s…

Buc-ee’s endless food selection can not be fully covered in the scope of this post. So, I will only mention 3 noteworthy food items. First, the Buc-ee’s brisket sandwich is outstanding. If you are stopping for a meal, PT offers a confident recommendation for the brisket sandwich. Also, if you need something to go, grab one of the many outstanding flavors of Buc-ee’s jerky for the road. Lastly, you can always find their famous Beaver Nuggets. Beaver Nuggets are some sort of caramel coated, corn puff…they are gross. Again, Buc-ee’s is a cult. Only get the Beaver Nuggets if you have completely “drank the Kool-Aid.”

Burying the Lead

I saved the best for last. The best reason for stopping at Buc-ee’s is the restrooms…seriously. Their restrooms are cleaned many timnes throughout the day. I have never been in cleaner public restrooms. If you have a high maintenance travel partner (welcome to my world), the cleanliness of Buc-ee’s restrooms can not be disputed.

The bragging about the restrooms is not just Buc-ee’s own self promotion. They have legit awards. Cintas, the national cleaning company, has contests for these things. Buc-ee’s regular dominates the contest for best maintained restrooms. Furthermore, if privacy is your priority, the stalls are all floor to ceiling, solid walls. Truly, your own private throne room.

Wrap It Up

To be honest, while Buc-ee’s has arrived in Ohio, I did not go to the grand opening. Buc-ee’s grand openings are nuts. They have been known to shut down adjacent streets with all the traffic trying to enter. Grand openings are for fully indoctrinated cultists only. I have been to several locations. But, most recently I tried to introduce Carol to her first Buc-ee’s in Richmond, KY. As I mentioned, it did not go well. The place was insane at 10am on a Saturday morning. Carol acknowledged that the restrooms were meticulous. But, its going to be tricky to get her to give them a second chance.

Buc-ee’s is an experience that I recommend for everyone to try. Their locations are concentrated in the south (originated in Texas). But, the Buc-ee’s mania is spreading rapidly. In Ohio, we were not only honored with the opening of our first store…but another location is breaking ground soon. This is truly a historic moment for Ohio. Have a wonderful day. PT
