690 Miles of Crap

As I have said before, sometimes my posts alert you to unique attractions that you should consider in your travels. And, sometimes my posts educate you on some unique attractions…so you do NOT have to go there. In truth, I am not sure which situation applies on this one. But, when I heard about the 690 miles long yard sale, I had to check it out.

Just the facts…each year, on the first weekend in August, Route 127 from Addison, Michigan, to Gadsden, Alabama becomes the World’s Longest Yard Sale. Yep, that is 690 miles of crap.

Speaking the Truth

To be honest, I did not drive the full 690 miles of the World’s Longest Yard Sale…not going to happen. Instead, I kept my exploration within Ohio. The Route 127 yard sale basically goes down the western edge of Ohio. Furthermore, the yard sale is NOT continuous…its an intermittent line of crap. There are large gatherings of vendors (20-100) periodically along the route. But, in between, its one here one there. There are even stretches where there are no yard sales.

Each of the yard sale concentration areas was a bit different. In most instances, there was a traffic jam leading up to the chaos. Parking was usually limited with off road parking likely. Thankfully, we caught a dry day. There was usually a food truck or two selling their goods. And, of course, there were plenty of people in search of that extra special crap.

Extra Special Crap

I will spare you from a lot of pictures from the yard sale. I think we all know what a yard sale looks like. Just multiply your average neighborhood yard sale by 50…and there you go. But, I would be remiss if I did not call out a couple outstanding yard sale items.

Now, I almost bought the animatronic Ray Charles. When you pushed the red button, he played a touchy version of “America the Beautiful.” His hands moved about the piano…his jaw went with the lyrics…and he swayed his head in typical Ray Charles fashion. But, even better than that was the pile of mostly headless, naked Barbies. My daughter used to mutilate her Barbies too. However, I did not have the vision to turn this troubling habit into to profit. I still regret that I did not inquire about the asking price.

Wrap It Up

There you go! You learn something new everyday. While this 690 mile long event is not continuous…its still more yard sales than I have ever seen. So, just remember that each year…on the first weekend in August…along Route 127…from Michigan to Alabama…you can encounter the World’s Longest Yard Sale.
