Traveling with PugsleyTonks

Traveling with PugsleyTonks is about the pursuit of that little slice of Americana. It's not big name or high-cost tourism. PugsleyTonks likes to find that little known tourist trap…that diamond in the rough attraction…the hole in the wall restaurant…or the special dive bar serving PBR. So, please come and join me in my search for Americana. All are welcome and its really just good, clean travel fun. PT

"FINE" DINING

Do You Like It Fresh?

A Visit to the English Mountain

Again, do you like it fresh? If the answer is yes, you need to dine at the English Mountain Trout Farm and Grill near Sevierville, Tennessee. And, as luck would have it, on a recent blog mission, Goosebuster and I had the privilege of dining at this unique, fine dining experience.

The English Mountain Trout Farm & Grill is not your average lunch stop. The grill is not much more than a kitchen shack. There is no indoor seating. We had to use the women’s restroom because the men’s was out of service. But, there is one thing that separates the English Mountain Trout Farm & Grill from most other restaurants. That is, they keep their main menu items alive…right up until you want to eat them.

Pond to Table

The pretentious Millennials love their fresh, “organic” and “farm to table” rhetoric. Well, this Grill has their own “pond to table” approach that sets a new standard for fresh and natural cuisine. You start by entering their shack and specifying how your fish is to be prepared…fried, lemon peppered or blackened. Next, you pick your sides then they send you to the pond.

To be honest, this is rural, country club fishing at its finest. You have a highly trained fishing attendant to see to all your fishing needs. He baits your hook if you like. But, bait is just corn…so its not a big deal. When you get a fish on the line with your retro, cane pole, he swopes in with a net to quickly secure your lunch. For full transparency, this will not test your fishing acumen. These are some contained and very hungry trout. You are likely to have your pole in the water for less than 5 minutes.

Yep, one moment you are swimming with your buddies in your custom made trout pond. Next, you make one bad choice and…boom…you are lunch. Then, a fresh, perfectly blackened trout…with fries, coleslaw, and hush puppies was brought to our table 20 minutes after hooking it. What a difference 20 minutes makes!

Well, if its not obvious, PugsleyTonks strongly recommends the English Mountain Trout Farm & Grill. The people are friendly, the service is great, and the fish is fresh and delicious. The proprietors proudly told me the Guy Fieri beat me to the punch and had already featured them on his show, “Diner, Drive-ins and Dives.” So, if you question my culinary evaluation…trust Guy. The English Mountain Trout Farm and Grill, near Sevierville, TN, is fine dining in the best way.

A Throw In Dining Bonus

With our trout lunch alone, I would have called it an excellent dining day. But, I just wanted to give a shout out to our supper choice as well. Goosebuster and I ended up hanging out in Bristol, TN/VA, for the night. There was a local, BBQ dive bar that I wanted to attend. And, Delta Blues did not disappoint…

Obviously, Delta Blues is all about BBQ and the Blues. Thankfully, it was a weeknight and there were no Blues bands playing. Goosebuster and I are all about the food…not so much the music. For food, we split this large BBQ sampler platter. Well, it may have been the best sampler platter that I have had for a long time. As for drinks, Goosebuster has his usual “sweet tea.” For me, it was PBR draft in a pitcher. And, unlike the sampler platter, PugsleyTonks did NOT share.

Wrap It Up

As you may or may not recall, this area of Tennessee is Dolly Parton country. At the time of the blog mission, she was still among the living. I wish we would have visited a few Dolly Parton landmarks to play my respects to this great person. But, I will have to do that some other time. However, if you come down here on your own Dolly Parton pilgrimage…you now have two outstanding dining options. Do you like it fresh? Then, the right answer is the English Mountain Trout Farm & Grill, near Sevierville, TN. However, if the priority is outstanding BBQ with a pitcher of cold PBR draft, then Delta Blues of Bristol, VA/TN is your stop. Have a wonderful day. PT
