Being the Good Daughter
To be honest, PugsleyTonks is a pretty good father. However, there are some drawbacks. For instance, when I go on vacation, PugsleyTonks has an uncontrollable urge to suggest weird places for MY itinerary. For a recent girls’ trip to San Diego, I received a PT list of possible blog missions. To be polite, I tried my best to work ONE of his suggestions into MY vacation. Thankfully, the choice in San Diego was an easy one. He had me at Lucha Libre Taco Shop…
The Lucha Libre Culture
In the unlikely event that there are readers that do not share my passion for Lucha Libra, let me back up a bit. Lucha Libre is a very popular form of professional wrestling, primarily in Mexico. This form of wrestling is characterized by agile, high flying aerial maneuvers by the masked combatants…i.e. luchadores or luchadoras.
In the true tradition of Lucha Libre, the losing luchador or luchadora is unmasked by their opponent. I do not know why this is bad. But, trust me, the fans really eat it up. So, that’s the basics of Lucha Libra, one of Mexico’s great traditions.
Next Best Thing
To be clear, I did not actually get the chance to go to a Lucha Libre match on this vacation. However, I did do the next best thing…the Lucha Libre Taco Shop. The taco shop features the expected Mexican/Cali cuisine (mostly tacos, burritos, and nachos). You get to have your relaxed fine dining experience while being fully immersed in the Lucha Libre culture and history.
To be honest, this blog mission was just what the doctor ordered. My friend and I had just had a long (but enjoyable) afternoon tasting wine. It was refreshing to have this down to earth food and cultural experience. Furthermore, when you are used to Mexican food in Columbus, OH, tacos in San Diego are a delicacy. I enjoyed fresh surf ‘n’ turf, beef birria, and chicken tinga tacos to compliment our day of wine.
Wrap It Up
You do not have to share my passion for the art and sport of Lucha Libra to appreciate the Lucha Libre Taco Shop. Its “Fine Dining” as PugsleyTonks meant it to be. The atmosphere is relaxed and very unique. The food is fun and delicious. And, for San Diego, the prices were reasonable. So, next time you are in San Diego and looking for a unique, fine dining experiance…Liz the Chow recommends Lucha Libre Taco Shop.
