Traveling with PugsleyTonks

Traveling with PugsleyTonks is about the pursuit of that little slice of Americana. It's not big name or high-cost tourism. PugsleyTonks likes to find that little known tourist trap…that diamond in the rough attraction…the hole in the wall restaurant…or the special dive bar serving PBR. So, please come and join me in my search for Americana. All are welcome and its really just good, clean travel fun. PT

The PBR Trail

Defining the Trail

Yes, PugsleyTonks is a big fan of the very popular Kentucky Bourbon Trail. But, I decided to take this approach to an even higher level…how about the PBR Trail. I am not aware of a pre-existing “PBR Trail.” So, as of this moment, I am creating one. The major qualifications for being on the Trail are a total commitment to the PBR brand in your decor and furnishings. Plus, the pub must maintain a very high PBR sales volume.

The list of bars making the PBR Trail is likely to be a fluid list. But, my in-depth research revealed the following establishments as a good starting points for the PBR Trail…

  • The Recovery Room in Charleston, SC
  • Robert’s Western World in Nashville, TN
  • Moe’s and Joe’s in Atlanta, GA
  • The Boone Saloon in Boone, NC
  • The Fat Cat in New York City, NY

To be clear, I have not completed this list yet. Its more of a bucket list for my future travel pursuits. I expect to add to it as I discover more PBR obsessed taverns. So, let’s get things started with my first official stop. I give you Moe’s and Joe’s of Atlanta, Georgia.

Moe’s and Joe’s History

Back in 1947, two brothers and WWII veterans, Moe and Joe Krinsky, started Moe’s and Joe’s Tavern in the Virginia-Highlands neighborhood near Atlanta. The dominant products of their business were the MoJo burger and pitchers of PBR. When you visit Moe’s and Joe’s, you will notice pictures that feature a friendly looking bartender. That’s neither Moe nor Joe. The heart and soul of Moe’s & Joe’s is their bartender of 50 years, Horace McKennie…

Outside of the PBR, the much beloved bartender, Horace McKennie, was the best reason for the long success of this Virginia-Highland iconic, neighborhood bar. As you might expect, Horace is no longer with us. But, his memory is very much alive in the bar today.

360 Degrees of PBR

Trust me…Moe’s and Joe’s does not lack in proper PBR decor. No matter where you look, the greatest American beer is celebrated on all fronts…

Part of the fun of the PBR Trail is sharing the joy with friends. I was happy to share this inaugural stop of the PBR Trail with a Minor Public Official and his beloved wife.

Moe’s and Joe’s Cuisine

As I already mentioned, the MoJo burger and ample quantities of PBR on draft are the foundation for the Moe & Joe’s cuisine. However, as if the MoJo was not enough, the chicken wings are also a favorite of the Virginia-Highlands neighborhood.

Furthermore, in 2023, as awarded by the Pabst Brewing Company, Moe’s and Joe’s finally reached the top as the #1 PBR Volume Account in America. Since PT is such a major internet influencer, they asked me to pose with their coveted #1 plaque from 2023. Also, if the history, decor, or cuisine are not enough to sell you on the merits of Moe’s and Joe’s, there is always their bathrooms…a true slice of Americana.

Wrap It Up

There you have it…my first stop on the newly created PBR Trail. Moe’s and Joe’s did not disappoint. I look forward to pursuing additional stops on the PBR Trail as I flit about the country. I recommend that you do the same. Have a wonderful day. PT

You should send my mother-in-law on a mission to visit the one in Charleston, SC. She is traveling there very soon for a girls’ trip. Every good girls’ trip includes a PT side quest.
